Places to eat

Nerja has lots of places to eat. Some are great, some are not so great. Don´t waste time and money in the not so great ones, read on to find out which are the best. I´ve put them in areas, the old town means the area roughly East of the Balcon de Europa, the new town area is roughly West of the Balcon de Europa. Don´t necessarily think that where the locals go is good and where the tourists go is crap. Locals often don´t care about views or luxurious surroundings. They often want quick and cheap. Tourists usually want open air, great view and are rarely in a hurry.

Places to eat Tapas

Tapas can be any type of food but small portions of it. Typical tapas are Potato omelette (Tortilla de patata), pork in tomato sauce (carne con salsa de tomate) and Russian salad (ensaladilla). They´re usually free with a drink and are an excellent way to try lots of little dishes and be adventurous. The best tapas bars, in my opinion, are never fine dining but should be very simple and extremely fresh. They´re usually busy, noisy and are often brightly lit. I´ve grouped the old town tapas bars and the new town tapas bars so you can go from one to the other. Spanish people eat light in the evening and eat late, between 9 and 11pm in summer.

Old Town Area

Start at Taberna which is the first you come to from the Balcon.

La Taberna very Spanish looking, a bit touristy

El Pulguilla  do excellent small, grilled squid

Sevillano

El Redondo (Round Bar)

New Town Area

Start at La Marina which is on the corner of La Marina square.

About Breakfast

Breakfast is a big deal in Spain, especially here in the south where workers are legally entitled to a breakfast break during their work hours. That´s why banks, post offices, town halls etc are deserted between 9 and 10am and the nearby cafés are packed. There are lots of small cafés and bars around the Balcon de Europa that are always busy with locals and tourists having breakfast. Don´t be tempted to have a British/ Irish fry up as they usually serve awful bacon and hot dogs for sausages. If you fancy a fry up look at the British restaurants further down the list. The Spanish breakfast usually consists of

toast with butter, jam, olive oil and grated tomato (not all together obv.)

Croissants

Churros with chocolate or dipped in coffee

Sandwiches, ham, cheese, cured serrano ham

Fine dining

If you have a reason to celebrate or just like to treat yourself, these places are perfect.

Old Town Area

Unico  love this place. My pick of the posh places. Great, short menu, lovely food and service

Fusion by Silvio Santogiacomo do an excellent tapas tasting menu paired with different wines. Very, very posh (a bit too posh for me)

Oliva

Bakus

Restaurante 34

Sollun

Pata Negra 57

Punta Lara Area

El Avalon

Spanish (evening)

Spanish people rarely eat a big dinner in the evening, they have tapas instead. That´s why tapas bars are so numerous and Spanish restaurants are quite few and far between. You´ll also find them quite old fashioned (in a nice way) as they had their hey day in the 70´s and 80´s.

Old Town Area

Rey Alfonso probably the best paella in Nerja

El Niño famous for its suckling pig.

New Town Area

Meson de Antonio

Pata Negra

Italian

Everyone loves Italian food. It´s cheap and everyone can find something they like on the menu whether it´s pizza, pasta, meat, fish or vegetarian.

Old Town Area

Pinocchio Great for groups. They can take big numbers without flinching and everyone can find something they like on their extensive menu.

Little Italy This place is ridiculously cheap. 3,50€ for a pizza and it´s really good too. Downside is there´s always a queue here waiting for a table so that´s fine if you don´t mind eating whilst the queue stare at you like hyenas.

Bella Roma

La Fuente

New Town Area

La Bottega

Don Chisciotte

Spanish (lunch)

As I said before the Spanish don´t have their main meal in the evening they have a big lunch. The restaurants below are beach restaurants known as  merenderos or chiringuitos. They do fish “espeto” which means skewered on bamboo and cooked on an open fire. They also do big paellas at lunchtime and Ayo is famous for “show cooking” their huge paellas in front of the public.

Burriana beach Area

Merendero Montemar  do the best paella on the beach every lunch time (1/1.30pm)

Ayo  His paella has very little in it besides rice. Go for the roast pork instead

The Cheapest Place to Eat

Everyone loves a bargain and the centro de Dia de Mayores (pensioners social club) calle Diputacion, offers a real bargain and some authentic local atmosphere. Every town has these places and they´re subsidised by local government as a place for retired locals to get a hot meal. Everyone is welcome and they do an incredible 3 course set menu for only 6€!

To find the restaurant go behind the church El Salvador to the Plaza Cavana. There are two streets straight in front of you. Take the right hand street (calle Diputacion) and the centro is the first place on the left. address and map

Luxury villas and apartments in town centre

The best places tend to be on the calle Carabeo. Beware! They´re expensive! Especially the first two which are unreal! At the bottom are the Parador villas which are near the Parador hotel (hence the name). These are 3 to 5 bed villas with private pools.

Activities/ Excursions

Days out/ activities/ excursions in Nerja. A list of popular activities for groups in nerja. Caves, kayaking, golf, boat trips, jeep safari, diving etc.

Kayaking (Highly recommended)

The coastline between Nerja´s Burriana beach and Maro is breathtaking with natural waterfalls, secluded beaches and caves, a great way to see it is with a group kayak tour. Groups leave from the far (East end) of Burriana beach several times a day from April to Oct. Also canyoning, paddle surf, snorkeling, parasailing, hiking, bike riding and jeep safari.

Tapas Tour

If you think you don´t like tapas think again. Tapas can be any type of food but small portions of it. The Spanish eat their main meal at lunch time and pick at tapas in the evening which is considered more healthy and very sociable. Nerja is famous for its tapas bars and here in Andalucia we still have bars that offer tapas free with a drink, which is very rare in other parts of Spain. Have a professional guide show you the best places and introduce you to this amazing culture on this great little tapas tour.

The Waterpark
The nearest waterpark to us is a 15 min drive away (direction Malaga.) It´s called Aqua-Velis and it´s situated next to the shopping centre El Ingenio near Torre del Mar. It normally opens from mid June to mid Sept. From 11am until 6 or 7pm depending on the season. It costs 22,50€ per adult, 16,50€ or 12€ per child, pensioners 16,50€. If you don´t have a hire car get a taxi or minibus if there are a few of you.

(There is also a waterpark in Almuñecar (25min drive away). I don´t recommend it because the water is salty and the pathways around the slides are red hot and burn your feet).

What´s to do?

There´s lots to do in Nerja and surrounding area but if you´re only here for a week or less I´d recommend you do very little. Explore the town and let it´s laid back atmosphere slow you down.

Here´s what I would do if I were you.

1. Visit the Balcon de Europa

Why? The views, the church, the buzz, the cafés, the icecream.

2. Explore the old town

Why? Beautiful, old fashioned streets, shops, bars & restaurants, the people selling homegrown fruit & veg on their doorstep.

3. Go to the beach

Which? El Salon. The alleyway to this beach is hidden next to the Unicaja bank on the Balcon de Europa square.

Burriana. This is the largest beach in town and has really good lunch restaurants on the sand. It also has pedaloes and watersports (July/Aug.)

4. Go for tapas

What are tapas? Tapas can be anything but small portions of it. Potato omelette, prawn salad, meatballs, cheese….Nerja has a great tapas tradition and most bars still serve them for free when you order a drink. If you really like something you can order bigger portions of it (raciones or media raciones.) For more info  http://www.nerjatoday.com/barsandrestaurants/

https://nerjatapastours.com/

5. Go for a few drinks

Why? Because you´re on your holiers!

Where?

Cochran´s (next to the Balcon de Europa) has a large, sea view terrace. Then head down to the Irish pub for live music (Thu, Fri, Sat nights.)

El Molino (Between c/Pintada and c/Almirante Ferrandis) has live and real flamenco music in a very traditional setting.

Buddha Bar (Between c/Pintada and c/Almirante Ferrandis) has a large roof terrace to chill-out and sip coctails.

Hostales (Bed & Breakfast)

Hostales in Nerja

Here is a list of hostales in Nerja (not like youth hostels more like guest house accommodation or B+B´s) with their official rating and distance to the Balcon de Europa. They rarely have a swimming pool or any other facilites but they´re usually good, clean, central and cheap. Ideal for those on a budget who just need a place to kip for a few nights.

If you try to book too far in advance ie, before the hotel has published its rates for that year (usually October of the previous year), especially with Booking.com the hotel will show as full. This terrifies people every year as they think they will be sleeping on the beach. Contact the hotel direct and ask them when they are likely to publish the rates for the following year.
